Some Things to Consider

Quick Fixes
When your teeth stain due to time or certain habits, simple tooth-brushing and a prophylaxis usually won't be enough to reduce discoloration. While your teeth may appear whiter for a time after using whitening toothpaste and do-it-yourself solutions, the effect may fade quickly or not be consistent throughout your target areas. Moreover, store-bought solutions may carry certain risks, like pain on your gums or other parts of your mouth.
Boost Tooth Whitening
Our Boost Tooth Whitening procedure uses bleach splints or removable molds that look like thin mouthguards we create after getting an impression of your teeth. You sink your teeth into the splints after pouring bleaching gel and you let them stay in your mouth for a designated number of hours daily. The gel breaks the stains into smaller pieces, reducing its darkness and making teeth appear lighter than its previous shade. The splints are ready for pick-up a day or two after your dental impression.

Veneers & Laminates

Many people desire a brighter, cleaner, more attractive smile, but have chipped, stained, discolored, unevenly spaced, or even slightly crooked front teeth. Often, porcelain Ohio veneers or laminates can provide these people with a completely new-looking smile in just a few simple appointments. If this sounds like you, we will be glad to help evaluate your specific situation, listen to the exact changes you have in mind, and help you visualize your end results. This may involve a diagnostic 'wax up', reviewing photos of similar case outcomes, or using a computer enhancement program to provide you with several options prior to performing the actual procedure. Fortunately, most Cincinnati veneers can be applied in two simple appointments. Afterwards, you'll just need to clean and floss your new smile daily, visit us regularly for professional care and maintenance of your Ohio veneers, and consider wearing a night-guard to prevent any accidental gritting or grinding pressure to your Ohio veneer while you sleep.

How is teeth whitening done?

An impression is taken to make a specialized “mouthguard” or “stent” to hold the bleach against the teeth. The material is used each night for about 3-4 hours for a week or two, and at the end of this time, significant whitening will occur. In some cases, the change is nothing short of brilliant. For confidence in appearance, bleaching technology allows us to promise improvements in yellowing, aging or stained teeth. For very severely stained teeth, crowns or dental veneers may be more appropriate.

Removing Stains with Boost Tooth Whitening

Ohio tooth whitening treatments are most successful in removing yellow, brown, or orange tinges resulting from age, coffee, tea, or smoking. However, dark gray tones from fluorosis, smoking or tetracycline use, often will not whiten as dramatically; artificial materials such as silicants or porcelains do not whiten at all. Finally, sensitive teeth, teeth with periodontal disease, and teeth with worn enamel typically do not respond well to whitening.

Supervised at-home tooth whitening methods produce results via daily sessions over one or more weeks of wearing a customized gel-filled tray appliance, and may result in about a 4 to 6 shade improvement as seen on the dentist's shade scale. Afterwards, you can best preserve your new, brighter smile by limiting habits such as smoking, drinking coffee, and drinking tea.

Onlays

Porcelain onlays and crowns can provide strength to back teeth that have chips, cracks, or large fillings. Onlays are more conservative and aesthetic, because more tooth structure can be preserved. With porcelain, metal margins are not present.

Fixed Bridges

If you’ve lost teeth due to accident, injury, or gum disease, we can create a permanent 'bridge' appliance to replace the missing teeth. Not only does a bridge fill the missing space, thereby preventing repositioning of remaining teeth, but it also corrects an altered bite, improves chewing ability and speech articulation, and supports facial structures to preserve your appearance.

So what's a fixed bridge actually like? Well, the restoration is permanently joined onto the neighboring 'abutment' teeth on either side of the toothless area and consists of three basic units: the false tooth or teeth (called a pontic) and two abutment teeth crowns. The most appropriate style depends on the strength and health of those neighboring teeth, as well as the location of the toothless span in relation to the rest of your dentition. If healthy adjacent 'anchor' teeth aren't available, a surgically implanted metal post or dental 'implant' may be an alternate choice. And finally, for a large span of missing teeth, a removable partial denture or implant-supported prosthesis may be our recommendation.

How We Can Help

Here at Kenwood, we'll first take you through a dental exam to determine the best treatment for your teeth. Our teeth whitening in Cincinnati usually works best on yellow, orange, and light brown stains caused by drinking dark-colored drinks. Teeth with worn enamel, sensitive teeth, or periodontal disease aren't very receptive to bleaching agents. Teeth that have turned dark due to smoking and fluorosis or overexposure to fluoride takes a longer time to whiten. Note that bleaches can't whiten porcelain or silicon teeth.Depending on the result of your exam, we may recommend dental veneers and crowns if teeth whitening will not suffice.

Making it Work and Last

For the procedure to succeed, you need to insert the gel-filled splint on your teeth and keep it in your mouth for three to four hours every night for one to two weeks. Significant whitening usually shows after such time: you can expect it to be four to six shades lighter than your teeth before the procedure. Once you've achieved this desired brightness, you can schedule an appointment with us so we can examine and record the outcome and schedule a session for maintenance.

In the meantime, you can preserve the brightness of your teeth through meticulous oral hygiene, which includes doing the following:
• Brushing teeth after every meal
• Drinking more water, especially if you can't brush your teeth right after a meal
• Using a straw for staining and acidic drinks such as soda, coffee, tea, and wine or reducing intake of such beverages as well as berries and tomato sauce
• Eating crunchy and saliva-producing fruits and vegetables (apples, celery). White cheese is also a saliva-maker and contains calcium that helps rebuild tooth enamel.
• Avoiding smoking
• Regular dental teeth cleaning
